  • THE MAGIC OF MONDELLO PARK

    Updated: 2012-08-31 20:00:20
Your local racing circuit is a special place, yet one that is often overlooked - unless you happen to live next door to the Nordschliefe. I guess it's a case of the grass always being greener on the other side, but rarely do we give enough credit to our home circuits. I've shot more events at Mondello Park than I care to remember, and as such have pretty much taken the place for granted. With all the doom and gloom - financially speaking - surrounding the world of motorsport these days, it has made me looking at things differently and forced me to appreciate things more. Rather than taking Mondello for granted, I want to show you why it's one of my favourite racing circuits anywhere in the world.

We’re hoping that prospective LeMons teams have taken note and are now searching for sub-500-buck examples of the fine machines that made the list, but perhaps [...]

  • Lexus of Australia Reveals GS350 F Sport Safety Car for Sydney Motorsport Park

    Updated: 2012-08-31 17:53:27
Lexus’s redesigned 2013 GS sedan took a marked step forward in sportiness relative to the outgoing model, and it looks like the brand is intent on reinforcing the theme by providing Sydney Motorsport Park with a GS350 F Sport safety car. Okay, so it’s not exactly a GS350 race car, but until recently, the idea [...]

  • Pink Camaro SS to Pace NASCAR Race, Raise Money for American Cancer Society

    Updated: 2012-08-31 17:47:54
We’re bigger fans of safety cars than we are of pace cars. And we’re pretty confident in our opinion when you compare BMW’s M6 MotoGP safety car or Mercedes’ C63 AMG Coupe Black Series DTM safety car with the likes of, well, this. But despite our biases, we can get on board with the pink [...]

  • 2013 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 Convertible Tested: Top Goes Down, Ears Perk Up

    Updated: 2012-08-31 17:27:36
The folks at Chevrolet think otherwise, but in addition to baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie, few things ooze Americana more than does a Ford Mustang convertible, especially one propelled by a V-8 engine. That was true in April 1964, when Ford unveiled the original at the New York World’s Fair, and it’s true today, [...]

  • Nissan Reveals 2013 Sentra: Well, It’s Bigger

    Updated: 2012-08-31 17:12:07
The new Nissan Sentra has 130 hp. That’s a number surpassed by every car in its class. Plus, it’s less than the outgoing Sentra had. In fact, the 2013 Sentra is outgunned by the ’94 Sentra SE-R. To paraphrase Dr. Zoidberg: Nissan, your horsepower numbers are bad and you should feel bad. READ MORE ››

    Updated: 2012-08-30 21:17:45
Forty may be the new thirty. Where five years ago automakers would advertise the impressive 30-ish-mpg-highway rating of a mid-size family sedan, we’ve reached a point where new models are breaking into the high 30s. Nissan’s brand-new Altima, for example, is rated for 27 mpg city and 38 on the highway. The Ford Fusion, also [...]

  • Big Brother and the Targa Newfoundland

    Updated: 2012-08-30 05:14:00
A hundred years ago, when I was in high school, I read George Orwell’s novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. In 1949, when it was published, it was satire. Today, it’s reality. That Big Brother is everywhere already, let there be no doubt. Take your own money out of your own bank account via a bank machine transaction and your picture is taken as you do it. Walk through your workplace at any hour of the day or night and somebody is likely watching you. Stroll across Nathan Phillips Square to the front door of Toronto City Hall or sit down to eat...

  • 2012 BMW 328i Sedan Automatic Instrumented Test: Twice as Many Gears as Cylinders

    Updated: 2012-08-29 23:47:57
There’s absolutely no reason why a car’s cylinder and gear counts should match, but the world seems more at balance when they do. The latest entry-level automatic 3-series, however, has shifted from six cylinders and six ratios to four and eight. This is fuel-economy progress, they tell us, but it just feels wrong. • 200-Proof LeMons Photos: ¡Revolución Limones!

On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. The truck-like shifter apparently was a dead giveaway, because the first commenter to correctly identify it as a Hummer H3T’s five-speed unit also was the first to post a comment. That lucky [...]

  • VIDEO: A CLOSE CALL AT EBISU

    Updated: 2012-08-29 00:00:41
The Mustang crash at FD Pro Am in Las Vegas wasn't the only scary drifting accident over the weekend. Over in Japan at Ebisu Circuit during D1GP round five, Manabu Orido put his V8-powered Toyota 86 into the tire wall in another big drifting crash. Now the crash itself isn't near as frightening as the flipping Mustang, but what's amazing is how close the car gets to the trackside cameraman. Mere inches it seems! Thanks to quick reflexes no one was hurt, but certainly a scary moment indeed. -Mike

Driving a police-spec Charger as a civilian isn’t so much about the car, but the experience. That’s because it feels and performs just like a regular model—which we’ve reviewed in many forms—save for one major distinction: Its performance is almost entirely dictated by its appearance, not the beefed-up chassis or the burly 5.7-liter V-8. This 1988 Toyota Hilux double cab was built by Speedhunters reader Kurt Muller, who says that his experience building Japanese cars is like playing with LEGO in the way that everything can be pieced together so easily.

  • VIDEO: UPSIDE DOWN IN VEGAS

Thanks to the roll cage (built by Justin Pawlak at his shop Hot Line), Guthrie was able to emerge without major injury. Just another reminder of the danger that lurks in motorsport and the importance of having proper safety equipment in case things go wrong. -Mike

If Danica Patrick wants to survive in NASCAR, she’s going to have to start fighting back. She’s been wrecked, or nearly wrecked, in every Sprint Cup race she’s started this year. Saturday night, it was obvious she was just getting too uppity – it was late in the race and she was on the lead lap and closing in on a strong top 20 finish (in the two Cup races she’d actually finished earlier this year, she was no threat to anybody) – so Regan Smith just went up the track and ran into her for no particular reason other...

You can tell that even the people in Formula One are going a little crazy, what with the series taking the entire month of August off. For instance, the teams usually send out their pre-race briefings three days in advance on the Tuesday prior to a Grand Prix weekend. They started arriving this week on Monday, 11 days out from first practice in Belgium. Oh, and the beat writers are making stuff up in order to fill space, which is also a sure-fire way of telling that nothing is going on. For instance, a spokesman this week for Volkswagen Group...

  • 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid First Drive: Giving the Prius Line Some Competition

    Updated: 2012-08-23 18:36:15
After watching Toyota build itself a solid business with the Prius—more than 136,000 sold last year in the U.S.—Ford is one Detroit automaker finally getting serious about hybrids. It has plucked the C-Max people-mover from its European lineup, given it the twice-over to meet the U.S.’s strangely unique crash standards, and endowed it with a [...]

  • Did Woodbridge seal AIM deal with Ferrari?

    Updated: 2012-08-23 04:31:40
When I enjoyed my first conversation of the 2012 season with AIM Autosport of Woodbridge team principal Ian Willis, it was in February at the Canadian Motorsports Expo and he was telling me how thrilled he was to be running full-time in the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series with – wait for it – a Ferrari. Willis and AIM are no strangers when it comes to big-league sports car racing, having campaigned a Daytona Prototype for years with drivers like Mark Wilkins, Bruno Junqueira and Burt and Brian Frisselle. But the Ferrari deal came out of the blue when...

  • WEEK IN PICTURES: MCLAREN TO THE POWER OF X

    Updated: 2012-08-22 14:30:19
The pick of this week’s images lean heavily on two new cars: one expected, the other one absolutely not. Has there been a more off-the-wall car in recent memory? The unique X-1 concept is a product of McLaren’s Special Operations black-ops division, a one-off bespoke car for an anonymous customer with very specific taste. The [...]

  • THE CYCO MKII ESCORT

    Updated: 2012-08-21 15:00:29
It’s the sort of car you can’t help but notice from across the show. I think it was the ride height that caught my attention first and pulled me in for a closer look. You don’t see MKII Escorts with this sort of stance – I use that phrase in the literal meaning rather than [...]

  • Fond memories of Flamboro Speedway

    Updated: 2012-08-21 04:05:43
Back in the early to mid-1960s, I used to attend races at Flamboro Speedway out near Hamilton. A lot. In those days, I might be at Mosport during the day on Saturday to watch practice and qualifying for Can-Am or Formula Fords and then bomb out of there by 4:30 or 5 in the afternoon so I could get over to Flamboro in time for an evening of supermodified racing. Then I’d be back at Mosport Sunday for the feature event of the weekend. It was a great life. I went to Flamboro with my best friend at the time,...

  • SWEATIN’ TO THE OLDIES IN MONTEREY

    Updated: 2012-08-21 01:30:24
Much like prescription medicine, Speedhunting has many obvious benefits which are accompanied by those nagging fine-print side effects. While there aren’t many downsides to circling the globe looking for the best cars inhabiting it, there are a few. In my case the word jaded comes to mind. Fortunately the cure for this sickness is the [...]

  • Racing roundup: On Danica, Jimmie Johnson and others

    Updated: 2012-08-20 04:58:40
Musings, ramblings and confessions after a weekend of auto racing: – You have to laugh about everything that’s happened to poor Danica Patrick this year, her first full-time season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. She’s done just fine qualifying and the speed is there but Murphy’s Law has never been more clearly defined than when applied to her when she's road-course racing. Earlier this year, at Road America, she was less than a half-lap from a top five finish when Jacques Villeneuve forgot to brake and knocked her off the track. Last week at Watkins Glen, she was on the...

  • Versatile Tagliani wins NASCAR pole in Montreal

    Updated: 2012-08-18 16:19:33
You hear the question again and again: why can’t open wheel drivers make the transition to stock cars? Why can’t winners in Indy car racing, say, transition over to NASCAR and win? The people who ask those question, of course, are primarily NASCAR reporters and fans who love sticking it to the Indy car drivers. Although Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. haven’t exactly set the world on fire in NASCAR, and the jury is still out on Danica Patrick, they conveniently forget that Tony Stewart did it (from Indy car champion to NASCAR champion is pretty good) and...
